I hit a compliance problem at OPTEK94 this morning and I still have no idea what to do about it.
Not a complicated one, probably. I just do not know the rules well enough yet to tell whether I am about to make an expensive mistake, and this is not the kind of thing you guess at.
I am writing this today, unresolved, because most business writing gets done from the other side of the problem. Everything looks manageable in hindsight. This is what it actually looks like from inside.
I thought eight years would count for more
I ran a marketing agency for eight years and I genuinely believed that made me equipped for this one.
Some of it carried over. I know how long things take. I can spot a client who is going to be a problem before they are one. But most of it did not. Different industry, different buyers, different economics, and an entire regulatory layer I never had to think about before.
Eight years did not make this easy. It just means I panic slightly later than I used to.
The experience gets me to the right question faster and then leaves me standing there. I still have to go and learn the answer like anybody else.
The only thing that reliably works
What stops me is almost never that a problem is hard. It is that it has no edges and I cannot find anywhere to put my hands on it.
So I cut it down until one piece can be finished today. Read one section of the actual rule. Write down the three things I do not understand. Send one message to someone who has been in this industry longer than me.
None of that solves anything. It turns a wall into a list, and I can work a list.
That is most of what building this business has been so far. Not strategy. Just repeatedly breaking down something formless until there is a next thing to do.
Where I am tonight
The compliance question is still open. I understand it better than I did this morning and I do not have an answer.
What keeps me steady is that this has happened maybe fifty times in the last year, and every single time it resolved eventually, usually faster and less dramatically than it felt at the time.
That is the only thing I have. Not confidence that I know what I am doing. Just evidence that not knowing has always been temporary so far.
Tomorrow I will know more than I do now. That is genuinely all I am going for.
